Background of the Study
The migration of healthcare professionals from low- and middle-income countries to developed nations has become a significant global health challenge. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as "brain drain," has resulted in a severe shortage of skilled healthcare workers in many African countries, including Nigeria (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The healthcare sector in Nigeria has experienced a substantial exodus of doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals seeking better remuneration, improved working conditions, and career advancement opportunities abroad (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
Kwara State, like many other regions in Nigeria, has been affected by the continuous departure of its healthcare workforce. Many public hospitals and primary healthcare centers are understaffed, leading to increased patient loads, long wait times, and reduced quality of care (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Despite government efforts to curb brain drain through improved welfare packages and training programs, the healthcare workforce crisis persists (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
This study seeks to evaluate the impact of brain drain on healthcare service delivery in Kwara State by assessing its effects on hospital operations, patient outcomes, and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system.
Statement of the Problem
The mass emigration of healthcare professionals has led to critical shortages in Kwara State’s healthcare facilities, impacting service delivery and patient care. Many hospitals operate with a fraction of their required workforce, forcing patients to endure long waiting periods and limited access to specialized care (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Additionally, the remaining healthcare workers experience burnout due to increased workload, further diminishing service quality (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
Despite various policy interventions, such as increased salaries and residency training programs, the healthcare sector continues to lose skilled professionals to foreign opportunities (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024). This study aims to critically examine the effects of brain drain on healthcare service delivery in Kwara State and propose strategies to mitigate its negative consequences.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of brain drain on healthcare service delivery in Kwara State. It will assess staff shortages, patient care quality, and healthcare system efficiency. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining accurate migration data and potential reluctance of healthcare workers to discuss their migration intentions.
